Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) Dandelion is one of the most complete plant foods on earth. Providing vitamins C,K,D and B complex; iron, manganese, phosphorus, potassium and many other trace minerals. The root is a classic liver tonic or “blood purifier”, with a stimulating and decongesting effect on the liver. It also encourages optimal digestion, with a rich supply of bitter compounds that, having stimulated receptor sites on the tongue, signal the digestive tract. The root also stimulates the production of bile, which in turn helps break down cholesterol and fat.
Burdock Root (Arctium lappa) Burdock has an ancient and respected reputation as a nutritive liver tonic that helps to clean and build the blood. Burdock contains chemical elements that have shown to be effective in preventing disease that may result from environmental toxicity. Studies have indicated that burdock extract has free-radical scavenging qualities in the liver, thus weeding out carcinogenic elements before cellular damage can occur. It is one of the best herbs for skin problems and can be used internally & externally to help relieve eczema, psoriasis and other skin related imbalances. Burdock is a specific remedy for the liver, it’s cooling which makes it useful for hot, agitated conditions. Burdock is helpful for nourishing and toning the liver and having beneficial effects on the lymphatic system, which is an important part of the immune system. Burdock is recommended whenever there is lymph stagnation or congestion.
Nettle (Urtica dioica) is a powerhouse! Rich in a full spectrum of vitamins and minerals including, vitamin A,C,E,F,K,P, zinc formic acid, magnesium, carbonic acid, iron, copper, selenium, boron, bromine, chlorophyll, potassium, phosphorus, sodium, silica, iodine, chromium, silicon and sulfur. Nettle is an excellent tonic herb. It’s antihistamine properties make it an excellent remedy for allergies and hay fever. Because of its nutritive properties and positive effects on the liver, nettle is also an excellent tonic for the reproductive system of both men and women.
Red Clover (Trifolium pratense) Red clover offers a rich bounty of nutrients that support the entire body. High in beta-carotene, calcium, vitamin C, a whole spectrum of B vitamins and essential trace minerals such as magnesium, manganese, zinc, copper and selenium. Red clover has a long history as a blood and lymphatic cleanser.
Chamomile (Anthemis nobilis and Matricaria recutita) This small and gentle plant has been long used as a beverage tea but is equally valued for its powerful medicinal properties. It is one of the best children’s herbs. It has been used for treating children’s colic, nervous stress, infections and stomach disorders. One of chamomile’s major constituents is azulen volatile oil. Azulen contains a whole complex of active principles that serve as anti inflammatory and antipyretic agents. It’s medicinal action is most obvious in three major areas: the nervous system, the immune system and the digestive system.
Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) Yarrow is one of the most versatile herbs in natures apothecary. It is a unique peripheral vasodilator and vascular tonic. When taken internally, the flavonoid constituents of yarrow act to dilate and strengthen peripheral blood vessels and help clear away small blood clot, thus increasing circulation to the skin and extremities. Combined with this are anti inflammatory qualities, making yarrow helpful for problems such as arthritis. In the digestive tract, yarrow is marginally effective at expelling worms and is useful for inflammations, bleeding and bacterial infections of the stomach and colon. The bitter principles stimulate digestion and appetite. The chemical make up of yarrow is extremely complex and recent studies have found that the plant contains sterols and various other compounds that possess a much wider range of beneficial activities than originally thought.
