Echinacea Root (Echinacea angustifolia) Echinacea raises the body’s natural resistance to infection by stimulating and aiding immune function. It works in part by increasing macrophage and T-cell activity. It is also rich in polysaccharides, which help protect cells against invasion by viruses and bacteria. It has antifungal and anti-bacterial properties. As a tincture, echinacea can be taken at the first sign of cold or flu to boost immune-system function.
Astragalus’s antiviral action in combination with its immuno-supportive properties make it a top choice as a preventative ally for colds and upper respiratory infections, as well as viral conditions such as shingles, where it would, in effect, both stimulate the immune system and reduce the activity of the virus. It is also a wonderful ally for long-term preventative support against this and other viral conditions. The combination of antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties with astragalus’ immunostimulating effects further work together to prevent infection. The polysaccharides in astragalus intensify white blood cell activity, stimulate pituatary adrenal-cortical activity, and restore depleted red blood cell formation in bone marrow. In other words, astragalus increases the bone marrow reserve, supporting the immune system in its fight against pathogens by stimulating the production of defense cells.
Reishi is one of the most highly respected botanicals in Chinese herbal traditions. Regarded as the “mushroom of the immortals,” it has been used for thousands of years to preserve health, support mental calmness, and promote longevity. Reishi is also one of the broadest-acting immune modulating herbs, with a wide spectrum of actions in comparison with many other botanicals researched, including anti-allergenic, antitumor, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, hepatoprotectant, antiviral, and a host of other beneficial activities. The diversity of biologically active components of reishi contributes to its influence on the central nervous system. Reishi was used in traditional eastern medicine as a tranquilizing agent for the treatment of insomnia and restlessness.
Turmeric is top-notch at reducing overall inflammation. It helps to thin the blood and thus promote circulation. It’s often recommended for conditions that include a heart weakness, like hypertension or heart disease, as well as those that affect the digestive system directly, like diabetes and colic or flatulence. It’s also considered a natural antibiotic. It helps fight infection while at the same time helping improve digestive flora and circulation so the body is better able to fight the infection.
Siberian Ginseng was traditionally used to prevent colds and flu and to increase energy, longevity, and vitality. It is widely used in Russia as an "adaptogen." An adaptogen is a substance that is supposed to help the body better cope with either mental or physical stress.
Oregano can boost your immune system and provide your body relief, especially if you have a cold or respiratory infection. Two compounds in the leaves and oil- carvacrol and rosmarinic acid- are natural decongestants. They can help to clear your chest and improve lung function.
Borage leaves & flowers Borage acts as a diuretic and is restorative to the adrenal cortex. It will renew and revive the adrenal glands after a medical treatment with cortisone or steroids. It can also be used as a tonic for the adrenals over a period of time. It may be used during fevers and especially during convalescence.
Red Clover (Trifolium pratense) Red clover offers a rich bounty of nutrients that support the entire body. High in beta-carotene, calcium, vitamin C, a whole spectrum of B vitamins and essential trace minerals such as magnesium, manganese, zinc, copper and selenium. Red clover has a long history as a blood and lymphatic cleanser. Both the flowers and the leaf contain phytoestrogens and isoflavones that have a beneficial effect on menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, mood swings and night sweats. They appear to bind with estrogen receptor site, preventing less healthy forms of estrogen from accumulating.
