Calendula is one of the first herbs to consider in minor first aid situations. A broad array of medicinal compounds in the flowers of the plants combine to help speed cell reproduction and inhibit bacteria and fungi at the site of injury. Infusions of the flowers are effective as a soothing and healing skin wash for various forms of inflammatory dermatitis.
Lavender as an infusion makes an excellent rinse for relief from pain and itching caused by seborrhoea, contact dermatitis, or flea bites. It also helps to fight bacterial infection as well.
Comfrey is one of the first herbs to consider in the topical treatment of burns, skin ulcerations, abrasions, lacerations, flea and other insect bites. A poultice or infusion can be applied directly to bruises, fracture, sprain and other closed tissue injuries. Most of the healing effects are attributable to allantoin, a compound that has been shown in several studies to speed cell reproduction, both inside and outside of the body. In addition to its cell proliferation activity, comfreys mucilaginous nature provides a soothing and protective barrier to the skin.
St John’s Wort contains hypericin (a red pigment contained with tiny glands that dot the flower petals and leaves), this herb contains dozens of other chemical compounds that have been shown to possess a tremendous range of healing actions. These compounds include various essential oils, flavonoids, tannins, and phytoesterol constituents - all of which combine to make St. John’s wort active against a wide variety of bacteria, fungi and even viruses.
Plantain is one of the best herbs as a topical first aid remedy for insect bites, stings, minor burns, and site specific contact dermatitis. Plantain contain aucubin and saponin constituents which have been shown to have antibacterial properties.
Chamomile for inflammation of the skin, including those caused by flea bites, contact allergies and various bacterial and fungal infections, a cooled water infusion of the flowers can be used a soothing, healing, antimicrobial rinse.
Yarrow was known as “wound wort” by warriors who used the plant to stop bleeding and disinfect wounds on the battlefield. A cooled tea of the plant can be used as a pain and itch relieving antiseptic skin rinse and the aromatic nature of the plant may be of help in repelling fleas, mosquitos and biting flies.
Red Clover has an impressive amount of protein, magnesium, calcium, potassium and vitamin C and B complex. All of these nutrients are joined with a complex assortment of medicinally active chemical compounds amounting to an excellent remedy for psoriasis, eczema and other skin disorder, especially those believed to be secondary to excess waste materials in the blood stream.
Ingredients: 1.5 oz of organic dried chamomile, calendula, plantain, yarrow, red clover, comfrey, St. John’s wort & lavender.
Directions: Keep in a cool dark area.
Use 1 tsp of rinse mix/cup. Infuse covered for 15 minutes, strain and pour allow to cool. Soak compress into infusion and apply to wound.
