Our Cold and Flu Elixir and Red Zinger Tea pair well together for an immune supporting, digestive blend to get through the seasonal changes.
Elder (Sambucus nigra) the berries from the Elder plant have powerful antiviral properties and so are helpful in tearing viral infections such as flus, herpes and shingles. They’re also used for treating upper respiratory infections. Elderberry is also an immune enhancer and blood cleanser, as it helps to detoxify extracellular fluid. Elderflower has been used in traditional medicine all over the world in many different cultures due to its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. The most common uses are for colds and flu, sinus infections, and other respiratory disturbances. Elderflower has antibacterial and antiviral properties and may also help alleviate some allergies and boost the functioning of the immune system.
Rose hips (Rosa canina) provide a rich herbal source of vitamin C and flavonoids; they are considered to have antiscorbutic effects. The flavonoids synergize the effects of vitamin C. The vitamin C content enhances the integrity of connective tissue and reduces inflammation. The vitamin C and flavonoid content also support the immune system and counter the stress response. Rose hips have antioxidant properties that support the heart and cardiovascular system. They enhance the integrity of the vascular system, and can be used as a daily tonic to reduce capillary fragility and permeability.
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is prized both for its amazing flavour and for its remarkable healing powers. It is one of the classic herbs of traditional Chinese medicine. It is highly regarded as a primary herb for the reproductive, respiratory and disgestive systems.
Calendula (Calendula officinalis) it is a powerful vulnerary, healing the body by promoting cell repair, and acts as an antiseptic. It is used internally for fevers and gastrointestinal problems.
Orange Peel (Citrus sinensis) has anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal properties. The taste and energetics of Orange Peel are acrid, bitter, aromatic, warming and astringent. Orange Peel has an affinity to the digestive system, respiratory system and nervous system. There are many more enzymes, flavonoids, and phyto-nutrients in the orange peel than in the fruit.
Hibiscus (Hibiscus spp.) is very high in vitamin C and bioflavonoids (which are most commonly known for their antioxidant activity). It has been shown to have mild diuretic and choleretic (stimulates bile production in the liver) effects, decreasing the viscosity of the blood, reducing blood pressure and stimulating intestinal peristalsis. The plant is also reported to be antiseptic, aphrodisiac, astringent, and digestive. It is used as a folk remedy to treat cough, stop heavy post-partum bleeding, lower fever, hangover, and is often used as a tonic tea for digestive and kidney functions.
Cinnamon has a warming, stimulating energy that enhances circulation throughout the body. As a carminative, cinnamon aids in the digestion of fats and settles indigestion. It is helpful for stabilizing blood sugar and lowering cholesterol. In addition to their antioxidant action, its volatile oils lend antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties which may be helpful in the case of infection. Cinnamon is a demulcent, producing a slippery mucilage, but it can also have an astringent, drying effect and is used as an expectorant for congested conditions.
Cloves (Syzygium aromaticum) have a supportive action to the digestive system in all systems of traditional herbalism. Because of their warming and digestive supportive properties they have also been used to support a healthy immune and respiratory system.
Honey is used as an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antibacterial agent. High-quality natural honey contains important antioxidants including flavonoids and polyphenols that are found in propolis.
